Abstract
978,279. Switching systems for consumer devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 1, 1963, No. 38620/63. Heading H2H. An incandescent lamp 1 energized from an A.C. supply is controlled by a switching arrangement comprising switches 4, 5, a rectifier bridge 9 and a silicon-controlled rectifier 10, so that closure of switch 4 operates the lamp at full brightness and closure of the switch 5 allows the lamp to be dimmed to an extent dependent on the instant of switching of the rectifier 10 in each half cycle of the supply. The rectifier 10 is controlled by a timing circuit comprising a capacitor 14 which applies a switching pulse to the gate of rectifier 10 when transistors 15, 16 become (sequentially) conductive, the time taken for this to occur being determined by the setting of a variable resistance 13 so coupled to switch 5 that when the latter is closed the maximum resistance is present in the timing circuit. The minimum resistance value is determined by resistor 12 so chosen that the maximum power rating of rectifier 10 is not exceeded. An L.C. suppressor circuit 6, 7, 8 is provided.
