Abstract

A panel-treating process consists in the successive and continuous steps of wetting the surface of a wood panel with a liquid comprising 2-5% of an acrylate resin in water to swell and raise up the wood fibres from the surface of the panel, subjecting the surface and the raised fibres to singeing heat before the liquid penetrates into the panel and for a time only sufficient to singe the raised fibres and dry the panel surface without changing the panel colour and finally sanding said surface to remove the singed fibres while leaving an acrylate resin coating on the surface. By "acrylate resin" is meant a synthetic liquid resin formed by polymerization of acrylic acid and/or one of its simple derivatives. Apparatus is described which brings about three successive treatments each of coating, singeing and sanding.
