Abstract
977,488. Sludge clarification apparatus. WATER ENGINEERING Ltd., and E. ASENDORF. Jan. 7, 1963, No. 733/63. Heading B1D. Apparatus for clarifying sludges comprises a tank having an inlet 1 and an outlet 8 and one or more distributer elements 6, 7 disposed within and perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the tank, each distributer element having a plurality of uniformly distributed apertures, the diameters of which increase from the top to the bottom of the element, Fig. 2. Preferably, the diameters of the apertures at the upper end of each distributer element are in a ratio of 1:3 to the diameters of the apertures at the bottom end thereof, and each element projects above the surface of water m the tank at least 10 cm., the uppermost row of holes being situated approximately 10 cms. below the surface of the water. The diameters of the smallest apertures should be such that the average speed of the sewage therethrough is less than 2 metres per minute. As shown, inlet weirs 1 and 8 are provided, the distance of the respective distributer elements from the inlet and outlet weirs being equal to at least 1/20th of the tank length, and the front section of the tank facing the inlet weir is constructed as a deepened sludge chamber 2, the distributer element 6 adjacent the inlet weir being situated approximately above the place of maximum depth of the tank 3. A sill 5 is disposed on the tank floor adjacent the part of the deepened sludge chamber 2 remote from the distributer element, the top edge of the sill being at least 20 cms. higher than the bottom free end of the distributer element. Fig. 3 illustrates the flow of water in such a tank, the pattern of which is such as to expedite settling of the sludge. Sludge settling in the tank may be withdrawn to a higher level sludge concentrator tank, Fig. 5, by means of pipe 4, and the cloudy water leaving the concentrator tank fed to the sewage awaiting clarification as an inoculating substance to accelerate flocculation.
