Abstract

977,318. Combined disc and drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 26, 1962 [Nov. 9, 1961], No. 40165/61. Headings F2E and F2F. A disc brake in which a rotatable disc 10 is mounted on a shaft 11 within a stationary housing 12 provided with a parallel-sided radial gap 28 such that the friction pads 22, 24, adapted to engage opposite faces of the disc, and a brake shoe 32, provided with a friction pad 31 adapted to be applied to the periphery of the brake disc, are housed in the gap 28 such that the parallel sides of the gap take the torque on the friction pads and the brake shoe when these are applied to the disc. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the brake disc is adapted for limited axial movement on a shaft 11 and only one friction pad 22 is axially slidable into engagement with one face of the disc by means of an hydraulic piston and cylinder device 19, 16 and the disc is then moved axially into engagement with a stationary brake pad 24. Movement of the piston 19 also actuates a radially disposed lever 41, pivoted to a pin 33 connecting the brake shoe applying lever 34 to the brake shoe 32, such that the shoe assembly is moved through a distance equal to half that through which the piston moves and the shoe is kept in radial alignment with the disc. When it is necessary to renew the friction pads 22 and 24, the cover 36 is removed together with the shoe 32 and lever 34 and the worn friction pads together with their backing plates are then withdrawn through the open outer end of the gap, when curved brake springs 42 have been removed, so that new pads can be substituted. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5) the hydraulic piston 19 is provided with an axial recess in its rear face into which projects an axial rod 47 fixed to the closed outer end of the cylinder and a blade spring 48 is arranged within the recess to bear frictionally on the rod on the wall of the recess. The brake disc being axially movable on the shaft tends to knock the piston back into the cylinder and the blade spring 48 prevents or reduces this effect. An heat insulating washer 45 may be located between the inner end of the cylinder 16 and the housing 12 to minimize heat transference. Instead of providing an axially slidable brake disc 10, friction pads may be applied to opposite faces of an axially fixed disc by pistons working in opposed hydraulic cylinders in the housing.
