Abstract
Glucuronic acid or glucuronolactone is obtained by oxidizing the primary alcohol groups or starch followed by alkaline hydrolysis. Alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxide and carbonate-, ammonia, or a strongly basic anion exchange resin can be used for hydrolysis. Metal ions are removed by ion exchange resins and the solution concentrated in vacuo. The acid is obtained if the ion exchanged solution is diluted with alcohol before concentration.
