Abstract
977,039. Transfusion apparatus. B. BRAUN, and O. BRAUN, [trading as B. BRAUN]. Oct. 29, 1962 [April 12, 1962], No. 40845/62. Heading A5R. A sight-feed glass for transfusion purposes has adjustable means in the outlet for controlling the rate of flow. The container 5 receives liquid through an inlet connection 3 and the upper end of this is pointed or fitted with a hollow needle 19 to perforate the closure member of a liquid or blood storage container. The flexible outlet tube is fitted to the lower end 17 of a centrally bored member 12 which fits inside a tubular member 10 in which it is axially adjustable by a threaded engagement 15. Liquid normally rises approximately halfway up the container 5 and then passes through apertures 8 in the wall of the member 10 and so out through the bore of the member 12. However, advancing the latter upwards, by the screw adjustment, causes its upper end to obturate the apertures 8 to an increasing extent, to reduce the rate of flow, until it ultimately seats against the shoulder at the top of the tubular member 10 and the flow ceases completely. In the embodiment shown an air inlet filter 21 is fitted to a flexible, bulbous chamber 20 from which air passes through a tube to apertures 2. This chamber 20 may be squeezed to assist in starting the fluid flowing and it also serves as a reservoir if liquid tends to flow back through the air inlet and so prevents the filter 21 becoming saturated. The upper part 6 of the tubular member 10 encloses a ball float 7 so that if the fluid container becomes exhausted the ball 7 will fall and close the upper end of the tube 17, so as to prevent the possibility of air being carried through the outlet tubing to the patient.
