Abstract

976,892. Hydraulic shock absorbers; valves. J. FORMAN. Nov. 26, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 46224/62. Headings F2S and F2V. [Also in Division B7] In a vehicle suspension incorporating shock absorbers 10 with liquid transfer passages 11, each passage 11 is controlled by a pendulumoperative valve responsive to deceleration forces and laterally outward forces on the vehicle to restrict or close passage 11. Each valve comprises a cylindrical chamber 17, Fig. 6, with an upper external axial recess 19 and a lower circumferential recess 20 connected by passages 21, 22 with the transfer passage 11 and containing a shell 23 with slots 24, 25 corresponding to the recesses 19, 20 in which is slidable a valve sleeve 33 with slots 34, 35 corresponding to the slots 24, 25 and a spindle 40 pivoted at 43 to pendulum 13 which has an upward extension containing a ball 44 movable between bearing plate 42 and bracket 49. Laterally inward movement of the pendulum relative to the vehicle body is prevented by bracket 48 (Fig. 2). Pressure equalizing holes 36, 39 and a light spring 45 are also provided. In operation in the neutral position liquid transfer takes place freely through the recesses 20, 21, slots 24, 34, 25, 35; on deceleration of the vehicle body the pendulum moves to the right in Fig. 6 pulling valve member 33 so that slot 39 obstructs slots 25; on cornering the pendulum, if on the outside of the bend, rotates spindle 30 and valve member 33 so that slot 34 obstructs slots 24. The degree of obstruction of the slots and hence restriction of liquid flow and damper action depends on the deceleration and/or lateral forces acting on the pendulum.
