Fibre webs are detached from a carding machine by a combination of a hollow perforated doffer 1 provided with an inner blowing nozzle 2, a detaching roller 3 provided with projecting members such as saw-tooth clotting, two web conveying rollers 4, 5, and a blowing nozzle 8 arranged to operate in the zone between the detaching roller 3 and the conveying rollers 4, 5. Rollers 3, 4, 5 are disposed at the inlet of a suction nozzle 10 and a rotary brush 7 also located in the nozzle 10 cooperates with the detaching roller 3. The flow of air from the nozzle 8 may be proportionate to the thickness of the web and may be controlled by a photo-electric cell. In order to facilitate the detachment of fibres, the saw tooth clothing points against the direction of rotation and is wound with gaps between contiguous turns of, say, two millimetres.
