Abstract

A composition suitable for use in permanently waving hair comprises an aqueous solution containing (I) 3-10% by weight of imino-aminomethane-sulphuric acid or a water soluble salt thereof, (II) an organic disulphide, as stabilizer for I, in a proportion of 0.01-0.2 mol per mol of ingredient I and (III) a water-soluble alkaline material in a properties sufficient to adjust the pH of the solution to 7-10. The imino-amino-methane sulphinic acid may be present in the solution in the form of its sodium, potassium or ammonium salt. The organic disulphide may be dithiodighycolic acid, cystine or di-b -thiodipropionic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof, di-ethylene disulphide, cystamine, a dialkyl or di-aryl disulphide, a bis (carboxyalkyl) or bis (carboxyaryl)disulphide, bis (carbamide) disulphide or a derivative thereof. Suitable water-soluble alkaline materials are ammonia, mono-or di-ethanolamine, tri iso propanolamine, ethylenediamine, morpholine, sodium carbonate, caustic soda or caustic potash. The solution may also contain hair tonics, penetrants, emulsifiers, almond oil, olive oil, lanolin, squalene and surface active agents, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-laurate, polyoxyethylene oleyl alcohol and polyoxy ethylene octylphenol, oleyl alcohol, liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate. Suitable oxidising agents in the hair waving process are sodium or potassium bromate or hydrogen peroxide. Specification 809,264 is referred to.
