Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula [R-S-A-S]2Sn(R1)2 wherein R represents an alkyl group, preferably having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms, R1 represents an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, preferably n-butyl, and A represents an alkylene group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, preferably ethylene. These compounds may be used for stabilizing polyvinyl chloride compositions (see Division C3). They may be prepared by the reaction of a tin compound which will replace the hydrogen or other labile group attached to the sulphur atom of the appropriate mercaptan, especially dialkyl tin oxides. The water formed during the reaction may be separated from the product by azeotropic distillation with the solvent e.g. toluene.ALSO:Polyvinylchloride compositions may be stabilized by compounds of the formula: [R-S-A-S]2Sn(R1)2 wherein R represents an alkyl group, preferably having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms, R1 represents an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, preferably n-butyl, and A represents an alkylene group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, preferably ethylene.
