Abstract
976,190. Making ornamental layers; laminates. R. SHERIDAN. April 5, 1962, No. 16621/64. Divided out of 976,089. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division B6] Sheets of thermoplastic netting having a random structure are prepared by arranging a layer of pellets which have asymmetrical stresses frozen in them (plastic memory) on an endless belt, passing the layer through a heating station so that the pellets expand and adhere together and then cooling the layer. The pellets, which may be of different colours, are formed by chopping extruded rods of thermoplastic material which have been drawn down and chilled as extruded. In the apparatus shown the pellets are discharged from a hopper 1 on to an endless belt 9, spread evenly are layer thick by a reciprocating spreader 15, heated by infra-red heaters 13, cooled by water sprinklers 17 and wound up on a roll 20. A transparent layer may be stuck on to the surface of the layer to prevent dust getting into the interstices. Suitable materials for the pellets are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate or butadiene-styrene or acrylonitrile.
