In a flat-section oil-filled high-tension electric cable of the type in which the flat surfaces are supported by corrugated tapes which permit expansion of the oil, the corrugations are generally rectangular in cross-section with their longer sides in the longitudinal direction of the cable. As shown, Fig. 2, three insulated cores 12 are enclosed in a flat-sided lead sheath 14, itself spirally bound with flat overlapping tapes 20 of hard drawn copper or bronze. Over these tapes 20 on the flat surfaces of the cable is arranged corrugated bronze tape 22, held in place by wire lashings 24. The whole cable is surrounded by a tarred or bituminized jute serving the or other by other armouring. The corrugations of the tapes 22 are shown in Fig. 3. The longer sides of the rectangles may be up to six times the shorter sides. This construction provides increased strength with saving of material over the conventional isosceles triangleshaped corrugation. The corrugated tape may be in two parts contacting of which one 40 is narrower than the other. This arrangement is still more economical. Various arrangements by which the lashing wires can lie in the recesses of the corrugations are described. The invention is applicable to two core cables.
