976,039. Overload release clutches. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY Oct. 18, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 41172/63. Heading F2C. A clutch for the refuelling machine of a nuclear reactor, of the type arranged to disengage automatically upon overload and to remain so until reset manually, incorporates a reversible - action spring operating to maintain the clutch elements engaged and also to hold them disengaged after their separation. In the arrangement shown the refuelling machine 40 is mounted on four wheels 11, one of which is driven by a reversible electric motor through a positive clutch 1 connecting driving and driven shaft portions 6, 7, the impact of the machine with a fixed stop at the end of its travel producing the clutch overloading. The clutch consists of elements 2, 3 with tapered facial teeth 4, 5 normally held in engagement by a conical belleville type spring 10 which, upon overloading, is flattened and then reversed in shape to hold the elements 2, 3 .apart, electric contacts 51, 52 being closed to stop the drive motor. To reset the clutch a non-rotary member 21 is moved axially by a vertical operating shaft 49 so that facial teeth 20 engage with similar teeth 19 on a member 2b spaced from the clutch element 2 by springs 17, whereby upon restarting the motor in the reverse direction the members 2, 2b are moved axially to restore the spring 10 to its original state and thus re-engage the clutch elements 2, 3.
