975,590. Air-cooled heat exchangers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUEHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM. GES.]. July 11, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 27547/63. Heading F4S. In a method of .controlling the performance of an air-cooled surface heat exchanger for cooling a liquid, e.g. to provide discharged liquid at a substantially constant temperature, wherein the heat exchange passages are arranged as walls uniformly permeated by cooling air, the liquid level in the said walls is adjusted to vary the effective heat exchange area. In the form shown, the apparatus comprises superposed heat exchange elements 4 filling apertures 3 in the base of the tower wall 1, each element comprising a bank of horizontal or inclined externally-finned tubes extending between an input header 4a and a output header 4b. These tubes contain the liquid to be cooled and are vertically spaced for the passage of air over the tubes. The tubes of laterally adjacent walls are parallel or slope in opposite directions. In operation, the liquid to be cooled is supplied by a pump 5 through pipes 6, 6b, 6c to the element headers 4a. The liquid discharges . from the element headers 4b through pipes 7c, 76, 7a and 7. Pipes 8a, 8 also connect the vertical pipes 6b and 7b to the headers and the upper ends of pipes 6b and 7b join a gas line 8c so that the space above the liquid level may be supplied with a chemically inert gas from a reservoir 9 which is itself supplied by a gas pump, not shown. The level in the pipes 6b and thus in the walls of the elements is controlled by the pump 5 and the pressure of the gas, which pressure is in turn controlled by a valve 13 and an escape valve 14. The valve 12 in the discharge line 7 may also be used to :adjust the liquid level. Valves 12, 13 and 14 and the gas pump and liquid pump may be controlled by thermostats sensitive to outside air temperature or the entry or exit temperature of the cooled liquid. A by-pass pipe 10 with valve 11 may be used so that only part of the total flow of liquid is air-cooled, e.g. during winter. Specification 974,691 is referred to.
