Abstract

975,539. Electric incandescent lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Aug. 2, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 29776/62. Heading H1F. A tubular filament lamp having a gas fill at approximately atmospheric pressure is made by forming a pool of liquefied fill gas within the envelope containing the filament and vaporizing the gas while heating the unsealed end of the envelope and sealing this. The tube 1 is first supported in clamps 5 and a stream of fill gas, e.g. argon, is passed into the tube from one end while the other end is heated to seal the filament support 23 therein. The sealed end is then immersed in a refrigerating bath while the flow of fill gas is continued so that a pool of liquefied gas is formed. The tube is then replaced in clamps 5 and the open end heated, the pool of liquefied gas 21 being allowed to evaporate, if necessary with the assistance of heat. When only a drop of the liquified gas remains, the sealing jaws 6 are closed, sealing the second filament support therein. When argon is used as the fill gas, the refrigerant may be liquid nitrogen although other refrigerants such as liquid helium or neon may be used. Other inert gases or nitrogen may be used as the fill gas and gasified halogen such as iodine may be included. The filament 3 may be of tungsten connected by lead-in wires to small sheets of molybdenum foil in turn attached to lead-in wires 22, 23. Tantalum spacers 4 may be arranged at intervals along the filament to prevent sagging.
