Abstract

975,523. Lubricating. E. SATZGER. May 11, 1961 [May 14, 1960], No. 17186/61 Heading F2A. [Also in Divisions B3 and F1] A pneumatic liquid sprayer for lubricating wheel flanges and slides, for cooling lubrication used in machining processes and for protecting the surface of metal sheets during rolling for example, comprises a liquid/air pressure tank 1, a control member 4 actuated by the pressure inside said tank so as to alternatively connect the tank with a source of compressed air through a conduit 5 and with spraying nozzles 8, 9 through a conduit 6. The tank 1 is connected by conduits 2, 3 to the control member 4, the conduit 2 leading to the lubricant and the conduit 3 leading, via a pipe 17, to the compressed air in the tank. The conduit 3 has a shut-off valve 19 therein. The control member 4 comprises a casing 20, Fig. 2, having a sleeve 21 therein urged by a spring 22 which is retained in the casing by a cap 25. The latter also serves as a stop for the sleeve-valve 21, which having a thrust-face 26 is constantly urged by pressure of the lubricant against the action of the spring 22. The face 26 is connected to the tank 1 by an annular space 27, ducts 28, 29, 30 and the conduit 2. A radial bore 31 in the sleeve-valve 21 connects the conduits 3, 5 via ducts 32, 33 when the valve is positioned as shown in Fig. 2 and compressed air is supplied to the tank 1. At the same time an annular groove 34, Fig. 3, in the sleeve-valve 21 is connected by the duct 30 to the conduit 2 and is filled with lubricant. The valve has two symmetrical grooves 35, 36 and a radial bore 37 connecting said grooves 35, 36 and the valve is prevented from rotating by a screw 38 which engages the groove 36. The valve 21 is also retained by spring-urged pins 41, 42 diametrically opposed and mounted in the casing 20 so that their tapered ends engage notches 47, 48 in the valve 21. When the build-up of air pressure in the tank is sufficient, the valve 21 is moved, against the action of the spring 22 and the pins 41, 42 to the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5. This allows a greater surface of the thrust face 26 to be effective so that the slide is moved positively to this alternative position. The pins 41, 42 now engage chamfers adjacent the face 26 to partly resist the action of the spring 22 and the communication between the ducts 32 and 33 is interrupted so that the source of compressed air is cut off and the annular groove 34 is connected to the conduits 3, 6 via a duct 53. The air passing from the tank to the nozzles entrains the lubricant in the groove 34 and sprays it on to flanges 10, 11 of wheels 13, 14. The pressure in the tank then diminishes and the valve 21 is returned by the spring 22 so that the tank is again connected with the source of compressed air. The grooves 35, 36 and an annular groove 54, Fig. 5, serve as lubricating passages for the slide and a sealing ring 55 is also provided. The valve 21, having an axial bore, houses a sliding control piston 58 which can be displaced by means of a bar 59 protruding from the valve against the feeble action of a spring 60. By applying pressure to the bar 59, the spring 60 is compressed and the piston 58 is moved so as to reduce the rate of supply of compressed air supplied to the tank by causing a restriction in the radial bore 31, Fig. 2. The piston 58 may be moved sufficiently to completely block said bore 31 and so put the entire system out of operation. Intermittent lubrication may be effected by actuating the piston 58 by a flyweight or a rotary magnet for example, thus the amount of lubrication applied can be related to the speed of a vehicle. For constant speed lubrication the piston 58 may be locked in a displaced position by a screw 77, Fig. 7.
