Abstract

975,442. Discharging molten metals. UPTON ELECTRIC FURNACE CO. Inc. Nov. 14, 1962, No. 43151/62. Headings F4B and F4K. An electrically-heated metal melting and holding furnace comprises a melting chamber 1 connected by a duct 8 with a holding chamber 9, a discharge chamber 11 with a delivery spout 12, and a displacer 7. Metal to be melted is disposed on a shelf 6 surrounded by molten salt 2 heated by electrodes 3 and 4, and molten metal 5 collecting below the salt 2 fills chamber 5 above a layer of heavy molten salt 13 heated by electrodes 14 and 15, and also fills chamber 11. Movements of the displacer 7 in the salt 2 discharge metal through spout 12. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the holding chamber 9 is omitted, and another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has the duct 8 sloping downwardly to a point above the heavy molten salt in said chamber 9.
