975, 297. Fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 7, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], No. 43144/62. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a cluster of fuel rods within a tubular casing and located by a central elongate spacer column which is fluted and resiliently compressible, the fuel rods being positioned between the casing and the spacer flutes such that the spacer column is under centripetal compression. A helically wound wire is preferably mounted around the fuel rod to space it from the casing wall and flutes. Three elongate columns 31 of uranium dioxide pellets in zirconium alloy cans fit within the zirconium alloy sheath 32, which is of perforated construction; the wires 42 and the elongate spacer 41 are also of zirconium alloy. Grid plates at each end of the assembly locate the fuel rod end caps in radially extending slots (Fig. 2 not shown). It is intended in use to circulate coolant within and outside the sheath 32; these flows may be of two different coolants. The stated object of the invention is to avoid coolant excited vibration of the fuel rods.
