975,060. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. Nov. 6, 1963 [Nov. 13, 1962], No. 43785/63. Heading D1G. A bobbin for a lock stitch sewing machine comprises an outer reel and an inner reel journalled on the outer reel, the arrangement being such that the reels are interlocked rotationally by thread wound thereon to the full capacity of the bobbin, and are released for relative turning movement when the bobbin is partly unwound. The arrangement is intended to afford substantially uniform thread tension in a frictionally braked bobbin. As shown, a hub position 43, having a radial flange 40, is rigidly secured to a hub portion 44, having a radial flange 41 of lesser diameter than flange 40, by a stud 42 which screws into hub 43 and has an enlarged head 47 overlying hub 44. A flange 50, of greater diameter than flange 40, is formed with a circular seat 51 journalled on flange 41, and underlies an enlarged head 48 of stud 42. A pin 49, upstanding from lead 48, enters a hole in a spring biased arm to press flange 50 against an annular surface on the bobbin case to provide frictional braking. The outer reel comprises the flanges 40, 50, and the inner reel comprises the flanges 40,41. Thread wound to the full diameter of flange 40 interlocks flange 50 for rotation with flanges 40 and 41. As thread is drawn off, the thread tension increases as a result of the decrease of the'lever arm represented by the outer diameter of the wound thread, until said diameter equals the diameter of flange 41. The latter can then rotate relatively to flange 50 and the thread tension is thereby controlled by the friction forces acting between flanges 41 and 50 at a smaller lever arm than the friction forces acting between flange 50 and the bobbin case. It is stated that two completely separate reels may be used.
