Abstract
974,971. Centrifugal compressors and pumps. J. H. CARRUTHERS & CO. Ltd. March 1, 1961 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41064/59. Heading F1C. In a rotary gas pump comprising a casing 1, Fig. 1, for liquid, a hollow rotor mounted within the casing 1 and including an annular rim 2C and a peripheral series of through openings 7 in the rim, a gas inlet 1A, Fig. 2 (not shown), to the rotor interior, and a gas outlet 1B from the casing, the rim maintains a bore in the liquid in the casing and slidingly engages the bore wall and the relative flow of the liquid past the openings creates a suction effect at the openings 7 to cause outward flow of gas through the openings and into the liquid. The inlet is normally provided with a non-return valve to prevent loss of liquid when the pump is stationary. Preferably, the rotor has vanes 8 which impel the gas towards the openings 7 and the casing has vanes 9 which suppress rotary motion of the liquid and guide gas particles away from the rotor periphery. A preferred form of rotor is shown in Fig. 3 in which channels 15 have throats 15A adjacent gas outlet openings 11 to provide maximum relative velocity of the liquid past the channels 11 thereby increasing gas flow. The gas pump may be combined with a centrifugal pump for liquids so that the latter becomes self-priming. The gas exit openings may be formed as hydraulic channels extending to the centre of the rotor so that the rotor additionally operates as a hydraulic impeller.
