Abstract
A paper-coating composition comprises an aqueous copolymer dispersion, an aqueous starch solution and a pigment wherein the copolymer contains 0.1 to 10% by wt. of a N-methylolamide of an unsaturated polymerizable carboxylic acid and at least 10% by weight of an ester of methacrylic and/or acrylic acid in polymerized form. The amide is preferably N-methylol-acrylamide or N-methylol-methacrylamide. The copolymer may also contain vinyl propionate and acrylic acid. The exemplified pigments are kaolin and china clay. Other additives such as sodium polyacrylate may be present.ALSO:Paper is coated with a composition which comprises an aqueous copolymer dispersion, an aqueous starch solution and a pigment, wherein the copolymer contains 0,1-10% by weight of a p N-methylolamide of an unsaturated polymerizable carboxylic acid and at least 10% by weight of an ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid in polymerized form. The amide is preferably N-methylol-acrylamide or -methacrylamide. Other monomers exemplified are vinyl propionate and acrylic acid. Exemplified pigments are kaolin and china clay. Other additives such as sodium polyacrylate may be present. The composition is applied by means of a roller applicator apparatus.
