Abstract
974,906. Sleeve applying tools. HELLERMANN Ltd. May 6, 1963 [June 8, 1962], No. 22250/62. Heading F2S. An apparatus for fitting a sleeve over an object comprises a set of arms 19 over which the sleeve is placed, first means arranged to be inserted between the arms to spread the arms to expand the sleeve and then transfer the sleeve on to the first means, and a second means for withdrawing the first means when the object has been inserted into a recess in the end of the first means, to transfer the sleeve on to the object. In the construction shown the arms 19 are spring-loaded and housed in a slot 15 between a hollow member 12 and a cover plate 14. A rod 23 is adjustably positioned in a tubular member 24 by a locking screw and knob 27, the rod and member being driven upwardly by a piston working in a tandem cylinder 26. A tube 28 is slidably mounted about the rod 23 and tubular member 24. The tube 28 and its extension 31 is urged upwardly by a second piston and rod 34 working through linkages 35 and 36, the latter being connected to the tube 28 and also being slidable in slots 37 in the walls of the hollow member 12. In the operation of the apparatus a sleeve is placed over and extends partly beyond the arms which are then spread by the actuation of rod 23. Tube 28 is then actuated to spread the arms further and transfer the sleeve to its upper end. An article, e.g. a transistor condenser, cable or the like, is placed in the tube 28 wherein it is supported by the end of rod 23. The tube 28 is then retracted, the upper ends of the arms 19 engaging the lower end of the sleeve to slip it from the tube 28 on to the article. The apparatus can be operated in a continuous cycle governed by a switching mechanism or manually. The rod 23 may be omitted where a cable or the like is passed through the tube 28 into the expanded sleeve or cable marker. Alternatively, a hand-operated tool may be provided which comprises a set of arms being spread by the action of a trigger or like mechanism, and a stripping member which moves relative to the spread arms by the same operation and strips the sleeve off the arms and on to the article. The stripping member may take the form of a slotted tube into which the arms are withdrawn after separation.
