Portable saw assembly comprises a spindle 16 which is rotatably mounted in a body portion 8 having at least one handle 32 and is, at one end, adapted to carry a circular saw blade 18 and, at the other end, adapted to be connected to a power driving means, such as a portable electric drill, and a gauge-base 2 adjustably mounted on the body portion for movement towards and away from the blade, the gauge-base serving to support the assembly for movement over a supporting surface with the blade within a minimum clearance distance of the surface. The gaugebase is provided with graduated posts 4 adjustably received in lugs 10 on the body portion 8 which has a boss 14 for the spindle 16. The saw blade 18 is secured to one end of the spindle by a thin-headed screw 42 and the gauge-base has a notch 6 which serves as a clearance space for the head of the screw when the blade is closely adjacent the gauge base. The base may act to support the assembly while the bottom of a door is cut-off with the door in situ. The depth of cut of the saw is controlled by a gauge 24a having slots 28 which engage longitudinal projections on the upper surface of the body portion, thumb screws being provided to clamp the gauge in position. A part 56 of the gauge acts as a guard for the blade, and pointed ends 25 serve for guiding the assembly over a workpiece when, with the gauge-base 2 removed, the assembly is used for ripping or cross-cutting, the blade extending through a slot 58. An alternative depth gauge is disposed on one side only of the blade. The body portion may have a guard 60 which is urged by a spring 70 to a position covering the blade and has a roller 66 which engages the workpiece to move the guard and expose the blade. The handle on the body portion may have a clamp 52 for engaging the bearing boss of the hand drill. A further handle 80 may be secured to the gauge-base 2. The saw blade may be removed and replaced on the spindle 16 by a spanner 49 having pins 48 to engage holes in the head of the screw 42, the spindle, at this time, being prevented from rotating by a spanner 84 engaging a hexagon 29 on the spindle and a web 15 on the body portion.
