Abstract

974,670. Flexible hoses. PLASTIFLEX CO. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 16, 1960], No. 40333/61. Heading F2P. A flexible hose of helical convolutions comprises a strip of material wound into a helix, adjacent turns of the helix interlocking with each other to form a hose, and means continuously bonding the adjacent interlocking turns of the helix in a sealing relationship and flexibly securing each turn of the strip to the adjacent turn to provide a flexible fluid-tight joint. The latter maintains the adjacent interlocked turns of the helix against separation one from the other, while permitting flexing movement between the adjacent interlocked turns of the helix whereby the flexibility of the hose is maintained. As shown, the core 12 is formed from a strip 16 which in cross-section consists of oppositely directed hook-shaped portions 18, 20 and is of polypropylene, butyrate acetate, nylon or " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark). The outer wrapping 14 is of vinyl chloride, rubber polyethylene, combinations of polyethylene and vinyl, " Mylar " (Registered Trade Mark) of fluorocarbons. A molten bead of plastic may be introduced into the recess 30, or a chemical or heat seal may be provided. A helical reinforcing wire of metal or a plastic may be disposed in the recess.
