974,549. Illuminated ceilings. INTEGRATED CEILINGS & GRILLEWORKS Inc. May 2, 1963, No. 17374/63. Heading F4E. [Also in Divisions E1 and E2] Light diffusing apparatus comprises a framework supported by and below a ceiling and having a plurality of openings, each covered by a light-diffusing panel the front edge of which is in overlapping relation with the rear edge of an adjacent panel, each panel having rear support means overlying and engageable with the framework and front spring means urging the front edge of the device against the framework and also against the rear edge of an adjacent device to urge this upwards. In the form shown, the framework is made up of inverted T-section bars 13, Fig. 5, interconnected by inverted T-section members. The vertical flanges 14 of the bars 13 have T-shaped slots 21 and the vertical flanges 18 of the connecting members have vertical slots 24. Connecting clips 25 have a central section 26 carrying spaced tabs 28, 29 and end tabs 30. The tab 29 is bent at right[angles to the section 26. The clip is passed through the slot 21 until the tab 28 engages the flange 14, the tab 29 then being bent up to engage the other side of the flange, the tabs 30 are passed through the slots 24 in the connecting members and bent over against the flanges 18. The framework is suspended by wires passing through holes 32 in the flanges 14. The diffusing panels 10, Fig. 7, consist of a frame supporting a light-diffusing member 38, one edge of the frame being folded to receive the edge of the member 38 and extended vertically to terminate in a lip 46 which rests on a horizontal flange of the framework 13. The opposite edge has a horizontal part to which the member 38 is secured by a clip 61 and a vertical part carrying a spring clip consisting of two splayed arms 58 which pass through slots in the horizontal flange of the framewotk 13, the spreading of the arms securing the member 38 in place. The ends of the arms are turned over so that the panel can be supported in a hanging position after the panel is lowered to the position shown and the lip 46 can then be released from the flange of the girder 13. The frame of the diffusing panel may be subdivided by transverse bars, separate diffusing members being fitted into each of the sections so formed.
