A pipe 1 carrying nozzles 2 (as used, for example, in the paper-making industry for distributing "white" water and fibre, or other material likely to clog the pipe) may be cleaned when necessary by a brush 6 reciprocable therein. One end of the pipe is connected to a fresh water supply 4 and a drain pipe 5 through a three-way cock 3 whilst the other end connects through a Venturi 14 and a stop valve 15 to a "white" water supply 16. The brush is secured between two plungers 7, 71 and the pipe has an open discharge nozzle 12 adjacent the brush, when the latter is in its non- operative position next to the cock 3, to prevent a "dead pocket" arising between last nozzle 2 and the brush. In normal spraying operation the cock 3 closes the supply 4 and drain pipe 5 whilst the valve 15 is open. To clean the pipe the valve 15 is closed whilst the cock 3 is manipulated to allow fresh water from the supply 4 to drive the brush along the pipe. Subsequently, the cock is actuated to close the supply 4 and open the passage to the drain pipe 5 whilst the valve 15 is opened. The brush is thereupon returned to its non-operative position being driven thereto by "white" water from the supply 16, the accumulated fibre and/or clogging matter being expelled through the drain pipe 5. In a modified arrangement fresh water is used to drive the brush both ways provision being made for this by replacing the valve 15 with a further three-way cock. Specification 727,036 is referred to.
