Abstract
973,792. Fluid pressure control of brakes. J.G. KNOWLES. Aug. 16, 1963, No. 32557/63. Heading F2F. A vehicle brake control system comprises a pump P driven by a transmission shaft, a reservoir 33 for fluid under pressure and a control valve BV movable by the driver into three positions to respectively apply, hold or, as shown, release the brakes. In the latter position fluid from the wheel cylinders 12 is returned through ports 38, 29 and pipe 24 to the cylinder of the floating piston pump P which is driven by the eccentric 19 to charge the reservoir 33 through line 25 and ports 36, 31 until the fluid return to the pump ceases. When the valve rod 46 is moved to the brake application position (Fig. 3, not shown), the reservoir is connected through ports 31, 28 to the pump cylinder, the latter then supplying fluid at a higher pressure to the brake cylinders through ports 36, 38. In an intermediate position of the valve port 38 is isolated to hold on the brakes and ports 31, 36 are connected as in the first position of the valve, to allow the pump to recharge the reservoir if required. The reservoir pressure is sufficient to apply the brakes when the pump eccentric shaft 20 is not rotating.
