Abstract

973,563. Making ball point pens; extruding; forging. I.R.C. Ltd. May 10, 1961 [May 18, 1960], No. 17485/60. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. [Also in Division B6] The tip 36, Fig. 6, of a ball point pen is made by the deformation under pressure of a billet of ductile material. The latter may be of electrolytic copper, aluminium, tin alloy or silver, or a billet may be plated with silver so that the plating appears on both the inside and outside of the pressed tip; non-metallic materials may also be used. A cold hollow billet is pressed preferably with impact by a punch 17, Fig. 4, within a hollow die 12 closed at one end by an abutment 14 carrying a core pin 13 which shapes the inside or cup of the tip 36. The rim 29 is formed by direct extrusion and the tubes 27, 28 by backward extrusion. A billet locating pin 18 within the hollow punch 17 is withdrawn as the backward extrusion proceeds. Depressions 25 in the pin 13 form spaced mounds 32, Fig. 13 (not shown), which are depressed subsequently to spherical shape by the inserted ball 35 or by a ball tool to provide a spherical seat therefor with intermediate ink passages. The extremity of the tip is also deformed around the ball. An ink reservoir 37 may be secured within the tube 28 by drawing through a die 39. In another embodiment, Figs. 7-12 (not shown), a solid cylindrical billet is used and in further embodiments, Figs. 13-24 (not shown), solid spherical billets are used. In both these cases a central wad is punched out after the extrusion. Specifications 564,172 and 609,817 are referred to.
