Abstract
972,420. Rotary screw pumps. G. R. LINDBERG. Oct. 4, 1963 [April 23, 1963], No. 39130/63. Heading F1F. A rotary screw pump of the Moineau type comprising a casing 26, Fig. 1, having an inlet 30 and outlet 28, houses a stator 12 consisting of a sleeve 16 with an insert 14 of rubber or similar material having a two-start helical thread co-operable with a one-start helical thread of half the pitch formed on a rotor 10. The rotor is connected to a drive shaft 18 by means of an axle 20 which passes through the hollow rotor and universal joints 22, 24 for eccentric and rotational movement within the stator. To reduce manufacturing costs whilst at the same time maintaining contact between the rotor and stator the internal enveloping surface of the stator is generated by an ellipse having a major axis 2a, Fig. 4, and a minor axis 2b which travels along an axis C STAT perpendicular to the plane of the ellipse while simultaneously continuously turning about the axis to produce a helix of pitch S. A complementary rotor with a pitch S/2 is produced and disposed in the stator with its axis C ROF at a distance e equal to a-b/2 from the axis C STAT . The stator is produced by first producing a core i, Fig. 6, whose outer surface is generated by a single helical line of a diameter a+b, which turns whilst simultaneously executing an eccentric movement in a combined longitudinal and circular feed device by allowing the cutting tool to travel along the path r-r a great number of times. The Specification proves mathematically that this surface is identical to that generated by the ellipse. A rubber moulding made round the core is then removed by screwing when the rubber is cured to produce the stator. The rotor may be manufactured by taking a blank 34, Fig. 9, which is mounted in a longitudinal and circular feed device and is machined by a rotating shank end mill 36. The longitudinal feed being S/2 for each rotation of the blank. Alternatively the shank and mill may be replaced by a cutter (not shown).
