Abstract

972,395. Bearings. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. April 22, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962], No. 2180/62. Heading F2A. [Also in Divisions B7] A vehicle, having a track element, is supported by an air bearing which is formed between the track element and a supporting member, so as to support the track element against load applied thereto. In an embodiment, a vehicle 1, Fig. 1, has a pair of tracks 5, each of which is carried by a driving-sprocket 2 and an idle-wheel 4. The track 5 has a tread 5A, which may have a moulded pattern 5B thereon; has a toothed inner surface 5C, which is complementary to teeth 2A on the sprocket 2; and has beaded edges 5D which are accommodated by rims 2B and 4A of the sprocket 2 and the idle wheel 4 respectively. Each track is provided with an air-bearing comprisig an member 6 having ducts 6A thereon which, being connected to a source by a pipe 6B, supply pressurized air to semi-circular shaped channels 7, which are complementary to the beads 5D of the track 5. Pressurized air is supplied by a pipe 9a to a chamber 9 which is formed between the track 5 and the member 6 and by a pipe 8A to pliable bags 8 which serve as air-springs between the member 6 and the structure of the vehicle. The members 6 may be of elastic material; the channels 7 may be provided with lubricant; the tracks may be of rubber &c., which may be reinforced by wire &c., and the teeth 5C of the tracks may be made of steel. In a modification, pressurized air is supplied through pipes connected directly to the pliable bags 8, from where it connects to the channels 6A, the chamber 9 being supplied with air escaping between the beaded edges 5D of the track 5 and the channel. 7 of the member 6. In another embodiment as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, an air-cushion is provided between the tracks 5; flap doors 10, 11 are provided at the fore- and aft ends of the air-cushion. Specification 935,620 is referred to.
