Abstract
972,286. Separating liquids by filtration and gravity. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 30,1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 19248/60. Heading B1D. Water contaminated with oil is introduced at 3 to a tank 1. Some oil 12 passes out at 4 while the remaining mixture 11 passes downwards and then up through a pebble bed filter 8 where oil is at first retained. Oil-free water passes out at 9. As the process continues, saturation of the bed with oil occurs, and thereafter the oil in the bed is coalesced into larger globules which pass from the bed and are discharged at 7. The pebble size may lie in the range <1>/16-<1>/8 inch and the pressure difference across the bed may be 1À4 lb. per square inch per inch depth.
