Abstract

971,959. Soot blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORPORATION. April 23, 1963 [May 7, 1962], No. 15918/63. Heading F2N. A soot-blower comprises an arcuate rail 18 extending from a position near the outside of a heat-exchanger 12 to a position laterally outward therefrom, a carriage 26 movable along the rail 18 and supporting one end of a lancetube 24 of which the other end is disposed in a port 30 in the wall 10 of the heat-exchanger 12, power means for moving the carriage 26 and rotating the lance-tube 24 and means 32 to supply pressurized cleaning fluid to the latter. The carriage is supported on rollers :48 on the rail 18 and the lance 24 is pivoted thereon. Pressurized fluid is supplied from a header 34 through a pivoted telescopic arm 38, 40 and a valve 36 to the carriage-end of the lance. The motive power is supplied by a reversible-motor in the upper part of the carriage which may be pneumatic or hydraulic (supplied through a flexible conduit 90 as in Fig. 2), or electric. The motor drives a worm-gear of which the pinion (Fig. 3, not shown) engages a rack 60 on the underside of the rail and simultaneously turns a bevel-gear which rotates the lance about its own axis. A cam 108 contacts a pin on the rail (Fig. 3, not shown) and operates the poppet valve 36 through a link rod 106 to turn the cleaning fluid supply on and off from the lance tube at two appropriate positions during the advance and retraction of the lance inside the heat-exchanger which is indicated by the cross-hatched area of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows the sequence of positions which are taken up by the lance 24 and the attached telescopic arm 35, 40. The front of the lance is supported on rollers 107 in a bracket 27 pivoted at 101 on the rail. The pivot 101 lies on an axis of a ball mounting 28 through which the lance passes into the heat-exchanger. The ball 28 is mounted in a hollow wall 116 of the port 30 in which the end of the lance is housed for protection when not in use. Air under pressure supplied at 128 to the hollow wall 116 serves to ensure a seal between it and the ball against ingress of the furnace gases. Switches LS1 and LS2 at either end of the rail limit the travel of .the carriage and reverse the direction of the motor as appropriate.
