Abstract

971,595. Power steering. RICHIER S.A. Nov. 27, 1961 [Jan. 9, 1961], No. 42276/61. Heading B7H. A motor vehicle hydraulic steering and transmission system comprises hydraulic pumps P1, P2, P3 and P4 supplied from a reservoir R and driven by the vehicle motor Mt (e.g. an I.C. engine) the output of the pumps P1, P2 and P3 delivering through lines 11, 12 and 13 to a junction box J from which the wheel-driving motors are supplied, there being provided a reversing control I for reversing the direction of travel and a return line 10 passing through a pressure control device C in parallel with a heat exchanger E, and a filter F to the reservoir R. One wheel-driving motor Mh is drivingly coupled to a pump P5 having an input connection 4 to the return line 10 and a series of one-way valves C1, C2, C3, C4 whereby the output 5 is always in the same direction. The output of pump P4 is connected through a pressure control valve L by way of line 2 to the output line 5 of pump P5 and their common output is directed through line 6 to an hydraulic distributer D having a manual control G and which has a neutral position whereby the fluid passes through a filter H and return line 7, and two supply positions for directing fluid through line 8 or through line 9 to a steering cylinder V. The arrangement permits the vehicle to be steered when the engine is not working (i.e. when the vehicle is being towed.
