Abstract
971,257. Bearings; lubricating. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 34314/60. Heading F2A. [Also in Division G3] In a plain bearing, a journal 2 in a sleeve 1 is subjected to a force applied at right-angles to the direction of action of the load carried by the bearing. In an embodiment the force is pressurized lubricant and is applied at A or B, Fig. 2, according to the direction of rotation of the journal. The force is varied by an electric inductive sensing device 107 which is connected through an amplifier 106 to a lubricant distribution valve 103 controlled by an electromagnetic mechanism 105. The lubricant is pressurized by a pump 108. In another embodiment the force is applied by means of pressure developed hydrodynamically. Lubricant is supplied to the clearance between the sleeve and the journal by a pump 101, Fig. 3, and a wedge of lubricant is formed between the rotating journal 2 and a member 10 which is pivoted about the sleeve at 11 and is held against an adjustable stop 12 by a spring 16. The wedge of lubricant becomes pressurized and provides the required force. The stop 12, having an integral piston housed in a cylinder 14 formed in the sleeve 1, is adjustable by means of a sensing device &c. as previously described. Pressurized lubricant supplied at the regulated pressure through a pipe 15 to displace the piston 13 and thus adjust the capacity of the wedge of lubricant so as to vary the hydrostatic pressure generated. In an alternative construction an extension 30, Fig. 4, of the sleeve has a flexible portion 31 and forms a fluid-tight engagement with a wall of a cavity 32 formed in said sleeve. Lubricant is supplied at the regulated pressure to the cavity 32 to displace the extension 30 of the sleeve and so adjust the hydrostatic pressure. Specification 877,233 is referred to.
