Abstract

971,160. Nestable cups &c. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. Nov. 17, 1960 [Dec. 10, 1959], No. 21516/64. Divided out of 971,159. Heading A4A. In a drinking cup or like vessel, particularly for vending machines and made of thermoplastic material, ribs or a network of webs integral with a sheet-like side wall of the cup project from the outer surface to increase the strength and insulation properties without increasing the weight of the cup. The cup is preferably made from sheet material premoulded by a moulding roll having superficial projections as disclosed in Specification 971,159 to have a base portion having a smooth surface, forming the inner surface 80 of the cup, and on the outer surface intersecting cross ribs 58, 60 extending from the base portion a distance not less than the thickness of the base. The cup may be moulded as disclosed in Specification 934,437 so that the ribs are stretched and distorted along lines 74, 76 and although decreased in height and thickness are not obliterated due to back pressure of air trapped in the mould. In a modification shown in Fig. 7 the cup has unintersected ribs on lines 88 being moulded from a premoulded material having no cross ribs 60.
