971,004. Moulding machines. R. W. TACCONE. Jan. 3, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961; July 10, 1961; July 14, 1961], No. 292/62. Heading B3F. A device for compacting sand for casting moulds comprises a vertically sided flask 11 into which is telescopically located a pressure head 10. A membrane 17 of thick resilient materal (e.g. rubber) is clamped around its peripheral edges to the pressure head by a frame 18. The pressure head has a back-up plate 20 which positively engages the membrane 17 when the pressure head reaches its final compacting position. With the compacting force of the pressure head, air from cavity 21 passes into a cavity 22 within the head itself and is compressed, some air, as at 25 may be trapped between the membrane and pressure head. An inlet 26 in the head is provided to admit air into and out of the cavities as required. The movement of the pressure head into the flask effects a compacting action provided by two portions of the pressure head, a rigid area formed by the frame 18 and an elastic area formed by the membrane. The vertical pressure of the head in co-operation with the varying compressive actions of the two areas results in a uniform compacting of the sand throughout. Alternative embodiments include pressure heads with a number of separate or combined resilient members and also a balloon-shaped membrane within the pressure head which may be air pressure controlled.
