Abstract
970,832. Tilt cab vehicle steering column arrangements. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Sept. 16, 1963 [Oct. 27, 1962], No. 40691/62. Heading B7H. In a truck with a cab 5 tiltable about a transverse axis 7 the steering shaft 13 is connected at the bottom by a Hooke's or other universal joint 15 to a fixed part of the steering mechanism and is supported at the top in a bearing 16 in the steering column 11 which permits rotational and axial movement of the steering shaft within the bearing and permits the steering shaft to rock relative to the steering column. The bearing 16, Fig. 3, comprises a ball 19 with an aperture through which the shaft 13 passes mounted in a part spherical seating 17 in the column 11. Alternatively the bearing 16 may comprise a rubber-mounted sleeve. Preferably the joint 15 is arranged so that a line through axis 7 and the joint bisects the sector traced out by the steering shaft 13 so that the shaft 13 and column 11 are coaxial in both the tilted and untilted cab positions. Alternatively the steering shaft axis may pass through the pivot axis 7 when the cab is untilted (Fig. 2, not shown].
