The torque produced by two windings 1, 2 of an induction motor M driving a magnetic tape reel is controlled in magnitude and direction by pressure of a member 5 in a carbon pile potentiometer connected across both windings and a phase-splitting capacitor 3, no torque being produced when the pressure is uniform on both halves. The pressure is exerted by a tape tension sensing arm so that the reel is either driven or is dynamically braked to maintain the tension constant.
