970,638. Secondary batteries. BURNDEPT Ltd. Nov. 8, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 29846/59. Heading H1B. A nickel/cadmium alkaline cell of the hermetically sealed type has the active material bound, together with a conductive powder, by an elastomeric binder and the electrodes thus formed are united by pressure to separators, preferably of a finely divided inert and insoluble powder also bound by an elastomer. The components are preferably made by extrusion and gas-absorbing spaces are provided. A positive 4 has a nickel gauze core and is enclosed by negatives 10 also having gauzes 20, the separators being indicated at 9. A layer cell is also disclosed.
