A nickel/cadmium alkaline cell of the hermetically sealed type has the active material bound, together with a conductive powder, by an elastomeric binder and the electrodes thus formed are united by pressure to separators, preferably of a finely divided inert and insoluble powder also bound by an elastomer. The components are preferably made by extrusion and gas-absorbing spaces are provided. A positive 4 has a nickel gauze core and is enclosed by negatives 10 also having gauzes 20, the separators being indicated at 9. A layer cell is also disclosed.
