Abstract

A pressure-limiting valve has a spring-loaded valve member 13 movable into engagement with a seating 15 in a direction opposed to the liquid flow, the effective area of the valve being greater than that of the seating such that when closed the valve is subject to a positive closing pressure. Liquid pressure from a master cylinder is applied to a pipe 10 which leads to the front wheel brakes by pipe 11 and to a chamber 12 of the pressure limiting valve. The liquid flows through the seating 15 to a chamber 16 in communication by pipes 18 with the rear brakes. When a predetermined pressure is reached, the pressure acting on the enlarged valve head 17 remote from the seating overcomes the opposing forces of a spring 19, normally holding the valve open, and the pressure on the seating area and the valve closes. On release of the pressure the spring 19 opens the valve and immediate opening is ensured by a spring-loaded by-pass valve 22 connected between the chambers 16 and 12. A practical embodiment of the valve is shown and described.
