970,294. Winding and reeling; rolling; shearing. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 20, 1961 [Sept. 26, 1960], No. 33663/61. Headings B3E, B3M and B3W. Handling apparatus for rolled strip comprises means for slitting the strip into two or more bands, and two or more coilers for simultaneously coiling the bands. Strip 1 from a rolling mill 2 passes through an edge trimmer 3 having trimming blades 4 and slitting blades 5 to pinch rolls 17 and 18, a narrower band 7 of the strip being guided by a deflector 23 to a coiler 13, while a wider band 8 passes through pinch rolls 19 and 20 to a deflector 22 and a coiler 12. The deflectors, Fig. 5, are actuated by fluid pressure cylinders 47 so that one or both of the bands 7 and 8 can be coiled on either of the coilers. The deflectors 23 and 46 are mounted on connected threaded shafts which can be rotated together, or, after disconnecting a tongue and slot coupling, independently. The walls 44 and 33 of a shoot 32 are swung away from one another about shafts 25 and 34 as a coil is formed, so that they will not interfere with the coiling. When coiling three bands the deflectors are modified so that the two outside bands are coiled on one coiler while the inside band is coiled on a second coiler.
