Abstract

970, 234. Magnetic recording &c. heads. FUNKWERK LEIPZIG VEB. March 25, 1963, No. 11700/63. Heading G5R. A magnetic head for recording, playback, or erasing signals on a magnetic carrier, comprises a core which is wound from a strip-like soft magnetic material of low remanence. Fig. 4 shows a front view and a top view of a magnetic head arranged so that its plane extends parallel to the surface of a magnetic record which is locally flat. The core 2 may be produced by winding the strip into an annular roll, possibly glueing the individual convolutions together, and cutting the roll into two halves diametrically. After the ends of the core halves are lapped, the windings 3 are mounted and the halves mounted together with the interposition of gap establishing foils between one or both pairs of the lapped ends. A recess 7 may be provided to give the required depth of core gap, and a running path 6 may be provided for the magnetic carrier 1, which is preferably disposed parallel to the plane of the core 2. The head is preferably embedded in synthetic plastic material such as a polycarbonate material. Two heads embedded in a common mass of plastic may be arranged on opposite edges of a tape for two-track working, Fig. 6. In this case the entire track spacing and the entire depth of the magnetic head can be used for intertrack screening purposes. If a composite head for more than two tracks is required, a plurality of magnetic heads, each having a core as shown in Fig. 4, may be arranged concentrically one within the other, all of their working gaps being in line with each other. The different sizes of cores can be compensated for by suitably choosing the thicknesses of the strips from which the cores are wound or by varying the breadths of the back gaps. It is also possible to give the individual cores equal magnetic lengths by suitably shaping them, e.g. giving the strip a curved or wavy shape.
