Abstract

A mobile handset periodically powers down ("sleep" mode) to save battery power. A message received during such a period is stored at a base station of the communication system. At a preset time, or after a predetermined interval, the mobile unit automatically calls up the base station, and, if there is a stored message, receives and stores the message at the mobile unit. The presence of the message may be shown by an LED.
