Abstract

The slippage of fibres in fabrics made from one or more alpha-olefin polymers is prevented and bonded fibres fabrics comprising fibres made from alpha-olefin polymers are made by applying to the fibres a bonding agent comprising an alpha-olefin polymer having a melting or softening point at least 25 DEG C. below that of the polymer of the fibres, heating them at a temperature intermediate that of the melting points of the polymer of the fibres and the bonding agent for a time sufficient to fuse substantially all of the polymer of the bonding agent and to soften or fuse only the surface of the fibres so that the bonding agent becomes sufficiently fluid to enable the the major portion thereof to accumulate at the intercrossings of the fibres and coalesce with the fibre surfaces at the intercrossings and then cooling them to harden the fused and softened portions to form bonds between the fibres at the intercrossings. The fibres and the bonding agent may be made from polymers formed by the polymerisation of ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, butene or 3-methyl-butene-1. The bonding agent which may be a single polymer, a blend of two or more polymers or a copolymer may be applied to the fabrics as a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or an aromatic hydrocarbon, as an aqueous dispersion which may contain emulsion stabilizers, e.g. stearic acid or 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, or in dry form as a powder or as cut fibres. The fabrics may be heated by running them through drying chambers on continuous belts or tenter frames or by running them over heated metal rolls and may subsequently be cooled to below 60 DEG C. by contact with cold air or water. The fabrics may then be run through a mechanical cleaning device to remove loose particles of dry bonding agent and calendered. In the manufacture of bonded fibre fabrics the alpha-olefin polymer fibres may be mixed with fibres of cotton, viscose rayon, nylon or acylic resins prior to the application of the bonding agent.
