Abstract

Apparatus for controlling the feed of sheets up to front aligning stops 8, 8<SP>1</SP> comprises main conveyer belts 2, and an auxiliary conveyer which travels at a slower rate than the main conveyer, and is disposed between the stops and the main conveyer. As shown, sheets 23 which overlap are fed over a table 1 by the belts 2 and driven pressure rollers 11, and are then fed into abutment with the stops 8, 8<SP>1</SP> at a slower rate by a pair of perforated belts 5 which co-operate with a suction box 4 having a separate suction chamber for each belt 5. Each suction chamber is connected to a pipe 14 having a rotary valve 13, 15 which is operable by a toothed segment 16 engaging a toothed armature 17 of a solenoid 18. Each solenoid circuit includes a current source 32 and a switch 10 or 101 which is controlled by one of two feelers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> arranged to be pivoted by the front edge of each sheet as it approaches the stops 8, 8<SP>1</SP>. If the sheet is correctly aligned as it reaches the belts 5, both belts grip and feed the sheet forwardly, and the feelers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> will be engaged simultaneously to cause the solenoids 18 to close the pipes 14 and cut off suction at the belts. If, however, the sheet is misaligned and one corner thereof engages the feeler 9, for example, the suction at the corresponding belt 5 will be cut off, whereas that at the other belt 5 will remain. Thus, the sheet will be skewed and straightened until both feelers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> are engaged, whereupon suction is cut off at both belts 5. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the suction belts 5 are replaced by a rotating suction drum having two spaced suction chambers each controlled by a solenoid-operated rotary valve as described above.
