Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a resin dissolved in a liquid vehicle which is a mixture of a liquid which is a solvent and one which is substantially a non-solvent for the resin. Pigments and driers also may be present. Specific examples relate to polyvinyl acetate dissolved in a wateracetone-toluene mixture; low density polyethylene in acetone-toluene; a linseed alkyl "Rhodene" (Trade Mark) M8/50 dissolved in toluene-"Freon" (Trade Mark) the solution containing ZnOx lead and cobalt naphthenates; a similar formulation in toluene-acetone; a safflower alkyd (Rhodene L42/70) in kerosene-acetone with the same additives, a styrenated alkyd "Scopol" (Trade Mark) 61NX in xylol-white spirit, ferrite red and cobalt naphthenate also being present; a phenolated alkyd "Beckosol" (Trade Mark) P-568 in petroleum-coal tar-white spirit, chrome oxide green and lead and cobalt naphthanates also being present; an epoxy ester "Beckosol P-886-50 in xylol-white spirit, TiO2 and cobalt naphthenate also being present and an alkyd modified acrylic acid "Lustrasol" (Trade Mark) 4280-50 in xylol-white spirit including "Milori blue", TiO2 and cobalt naphthenate.ALSO:Surfaces, including those of fabric and paper webs are coated by applying thereto a composition which comprises a resin dissolved in a mixture of two liquids, one of which is a solvent and the other is substantially a non-solvent for the resin, the liquid vehicle being such that the resin is normally held in solution but is precipitated when the composition is applied to a surface due to a reduction in concentration of the solvent liquid which is chosen to be more volatile and/or more readily absorbable or adsorbable by the surface. Specified resins are polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene, bitumen, an epoxy ester "Beckosol" (Registered Trade Mark) P.786-50 and linseed, safflower, styrenated and phenolated alkyd resins. Typical solvent/non-solvent mixtures are toluene/"Freon" (Registered Trade Mark), toluene/acetone, kerosene/acetone, petroleum and coal tar/white spirit, xylol/white spirit and acetone/toluene. Pigments, e.g. ZnO, ferrite red, chrome oxide, TiO2 and mileri blue and driers may also be present. An apparatus for coating paper and fabric webs is described.
