Abstract
967,397. Vehicle wheels; tyres. A. R. LARDIN. March 5, 1962, No. 8348/62. Heading B7C. An emergency auxiliary wheel for pneumatictyred vehicle wheels comprises a disc 10 with a crank-arm 22 which is rotatably and eccentrically secured on one side at pivot pin 19 and which may be secured to a splined adaptor 35 axially carried by the vehicle wheel, also means for interlocking the crank-arm and disc when the disc and adaptor have been brought into concentricity by the crank-arm on rotation of the vehicle wheel such that the weight of the vehicle is then taken by the auxiliary wheel. Adaptor 35 is secured to the wheel studs which fit ears 37, and its splines 34 are engaged by the splines 33 in the large bore 32 of the crank-arm and held by coupling screw 40. The vehicle is then moved forward or backward until the crank-arm has turned through 180 degrees to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the spring- loaded plunger 28, which initially rested in opening 15, snaps into large opening 16 correct registering being ensured when the detent 45 encounters stop members 17. The auxiliary wheel is restored to its first position by inserting a rod into opening 16 and pushing out plunger 28; a solid or pneumatic tyre 13 is carried by rim 14 of said wheel U.S.A.
