Amusement apparatus comprises means for controlling the movement of a model skier 15 relative to a moving, endless belt 23, the surfaces of the belt 23 and of the skis 18 of the model being such that the friction between the two causes variation in their relative speed as the angle of the skis on the belt changes. The model skier 15 is mounted on a metal support 19 which, as shown in Fig. 2A, forms part of a double parallel linkage system of which the arms 39 and 40 are rigidly connected at 41 but are free to move as a unit relative to the support 19 and arm 43. The operator of the apparatus controls the model skier by rotating a pair of foot controls 12, 13, corresponding rotation being transmitted to the model 15 via selsyn motors 46, 48 and the double parallel linkage system. In order to obtain the above variations in speed between the belt and the model, the surface of the former comprises a material having a pile, and the longitudinal edges of skis 18 are flanged downwardly. The apparatus also comprises means for testing the operator's skill in guiding the model between pairs of flags 26, 27 and 28, 29 marked on the belt. The flags are in the nature of contacts in a circuit to a scoring clock 32 which also serves to record the time taken for the belt 23 to complete a prearranged number of revolutions, the speed of the belt being adjustable by means of a control 35. In the event of the metal support 19 touching one of the flags, an additional pulse is transmitted to the clock 32 and registered thereon as penalty time. The apparatus may be modified to simulate water-skiing, in which ease a model skier is guided over miniature jumps provided on the belt 23 and the model is connected to a combined dash pot and switch mechanism, the latter being in circuit with a scoring clock registering the times the model is successfully guided over a jump.
