Apparatus for coating the horizontal surfaces 4 and 6 of articles connected in spaced relation to conveyer beam 2 by hangers 3 engaging the front and rear faces of the articles, comprises spray heads 7 and 55 mounted on arms 31 and 56 which are pivotally connected to carriages 29 and 57 which are reciprocated along cross beams 16 and 58 mounted on pillars 9 and 59 positioned outside the path of travel of the articles. The arm 56 is withdrawn to allow the hangers 3 to pass. The cross beam 16 may be moved up and down pillar 9. The articles may also be carried by floor conveyers and in this case the crossbeam 58 is movable up and down and arm 31' is withdrawn. The spray heads 7 and 55 are supplied with paint, atomizing air and control air. The respective control air pipes are connected to cam boxes 23 and 64 containing valves which are operated by cams to control the supply of air to the spray heads, the cams being selected manually or automatically in relation to the article size and synchronized with the movement of the articles. Means responsive to the presence of an article, e.g. photoelectric device 37, in connection with a timing device may be present to control the spraying period. A safety probe may be provided to stop the machine if the articles approach the spray heads too closely. The movement of the spray heads is interlocked with the movement of the articles. Electrostatic sprayheads may be used. A colour changeover device may be incorporated in the apparatus so that different coloured paints may be sprayed without dismantling and cleaning the gun.
