The care of a nuclear reactor comprises a plurality of blocks 2 of moderator material, e.g. graphite, arranged within a cylindrical retaining means 3, the blocks 2 having plane side faces parallel to the axis of the retaining means 3 and faces of laterally adjacent blocks 2 being in contact, and adjustable laterally expansible bracing units 6 adapted to effect bracing of the blocks 2 laterally against one another and against the retaining means 3 by the conversion through wedge means of forces parallel to the axis applied to the bracing units 6 to lateral forces acting between the blocks 2. Each bracing unit 6 comprises five assemblages 8 of six axially extending metal contact bars 9 arranged in a cylindrical ring and, between each pair of adjacent assemblages 8, a hexagonal metal compression wedge 10. The six wedge faces on each side of the wedge 10 engage corresponding wedge faces at the ends of the adjacent bars 9 so that when compression forces are applied resiliently (by means not shown) to two external compression wedges 11 associated with each bracing unit 6, the bars 9 are forced radially outwardly from the axis of the bracing unit against the adjacent blocks 2. One bracing unit 6 is central while the other bracing units 6 lie in three equispaced radial planes. Lateral expansion of the bracing units 6 causes the three cylindrical sectors 1a, 1b and 1c into which the core is divided by the arrangement of bracing units 6 to move away from one another, gaps 7 being formed or increased between the adjacent faces of adjacent blocks 2 in the different sectors.
